FAQ: Answers to your questions
We answer the most frequently asked questions about the Swiss Wikkelhouse. For simplicity – and since largely the same regulations apply – we sometimes speak of Tiny House in general. You can learn here that the Wikkelhouse has so much more to offer.
General
What is a Tiny House or a Wikkelhouse?
The term Tiny House encompasses various small housing forms. In the case of the Wikkelhouse, it is a wooden house that is variable in size and layout. The Wikkelhouse offers all the comfort of a standard house inside, with any number of sleeping accommodations, a kitchen and a bathroom. Often such a small house is built in modular construction.
What is a modular house?
A modular house is usually a prefabricated house made of wood, which consists of various segments. The individual modules are prefabricated in production, transported to the future location and assembled there usually within a few days.
Is Wikkelhouse considered the smallest wooden house?
The Wikkelhouse is as big as you want it. One segment is 5 square meters (length: 4.5 m/width: 1.2 m/height: 3.5 m). The Wikkelhouse can therefore vary in size and is not necessarily considered the smallest wooden house.
Why don’t you just try it out and create your personal Wikkelhaus in our configurator.
Wikkelhouse – What should be considered?
Our Wikkelhouse adapts to your individual needs and ideas. The Swiss Wikkelhouse has been specially adapted for the high standards here as well as the conditions in the Alpine region, for example regarding snow load and earthquake safety. Of course, different building regulations apply at the cantonal level and per municipality, which must be observed. We are happy to recommend architects who are familiar with the topic of small housing forms.
Where does the water in the Wikkelhouse come from?
Like any ‘normal’ house, our Wikkelhouse is connected to the (waste)water pipes.
How does the toilet in the Wikkelhouse work?
In the case of Wikkelhouse exactly the same as in all other houses 🙂
Can I cook in my Wikkelhouse? And shower?
But of course, and much more. The Wikkelhouse includes a wet room with shower and toilet. A kitchen with a high-quality cooktop is also integrated into the Wikkelhouse. Try it now: to the Wikkelhouse configurator.
Can I sleep in a small house?
Of course. One or more bedroom segments can be added to the Wikkelhouse. The fact that the Wikkelhouse is well suited for sleeping and living is shown by the versatile uses of the Wikkelhouse. For example, several Wikkelhouses have been designed that now function as vacation rentals. You can personalize the number of sleeping places in our configurator.
Why small housing forms?
Small housing forms offer many advantages and can be used in various ways. Different reasons speak for this housing form being contemporary and becoming increasingly popular. The Association for Small Housing Forms provides information about the most common questions and prejudices regarding small housing forms in Switzerland.
Can I order several Wikkelhouses at once?
Of course! It’s best to contact us and tell us about your construction project: info@wikkelhouse.ch
How can I assemble my dream Wikkelhouse?
With our online configurator you can easily make your dream of the Tiny House concept come true. Whether you put together a small house with around 40m2 (minimum size) or combine any number of modules into a large wooden house is up to your imagination, your budget and the available space.
Can I live in a kind of Tiny House all year round?
Sure! The Swiss Wikkelhouse is adapted to the sometimes extreme conditions of the Alpine region, excellently insulated and can also withstand a decent snow load. The heating provides cozy warmth in winter and extensive greening on the roof can keep the summer heat at bay on request.
Costs
How much does a Tiny House cost in Switzerland?
The costs for this type of Tiny House vary depending on type, size and equipment, if you want to buy such a small house. As with any prefabricated wooden house, the prices also depend on the Tiny House floor plan, which is why there is no fixed Wikkelhouse price list. However, we have something better for you: If you want to buy a minihaus and assemble it according to your wishes, our configurator tells you exactly what budget you need to plan for it.
How much does the smallest Wikkelhouse cost?
The smallest version of our Wikkelhouse costs approximately CHF 200,000. For this you get around 40m2 of living space with a ceiling height of 3.5 meters. This version includes a bedroom with double bed, a bathroom with shower, toilet and a round window, a kitchen as well as a living room. The entrance area and the back wall each have a large window front.
How high are the transport costs for a Tiny House?
If you want to buy a Tiny House, we assemble a Wikkelhouse exactly according to your wishes. Once we have built the Wikkelhouse in our production hall in Flüelen, we transport it to its future location. Transport costs are not included with Swiss Wikkelhouse.
How much equity is needed for a kind of Tiny House?
For a Tiny House you need exactly the same amount of equity as for any other house, namely 20% of the purchase price. Of this, only 10% may be withdrawn from the pension fund, the remaining 10% must be available in cash. Since a Wikkelhouse is much cheaper than a standard wooden house, you would of course also need to bring less equity.
Building Law and Production
Where in Switzerland can you set up a Wikkelhouse?
The regulations regarding the location of a Wikkelhouse differ depending on the canton and municipality. If you want to buy a small wooden house from us, we are happy to establish contact with architects who are familiar with the building regulations for Wikkelhouses and other small housing forms.
How high can a Tiny House be at maximum?
Here too, the regulations vary by canton and municipality. Experienced architects with whom we work can give you more detailed information about what is possible on your plot. Our standard Wikkelhouses are 3.5 meters high.
What foundation for Tiny House?
A Swiss Wikkelhouse does not need basement excavation and concrete work with long drying time. We set foundation piles, install supply and drain lines and build the already prefabricated segments on top. Due to this procedure, your Wikkelhouse is ready for occupancy in a few days.
Keyword sustainable building – how ecological is a Wikkelhouse?
Sustainable building is immensely important to us. We produce the Wikkelhouses in our production hall in Flüelen in the canton of Uri. For this we use almost exclusively renewable materials like wood from Central Switzerland. Thanks to excellent insulation and an efficient renewable energy supply with photovoltaic system on the roof, we also minimize energy consumption and ecological footprint.
How did the Wikkelhouse idea come about?
The Wikkelhouse has its origins in Holland. Its name comes from the idea of wrapping individual wooden elements for thermal insulation with corrugated cardboard, which has several advantages over the classic concrete and brick construction method. To adapt it to Swiss standards, requirements and harsher winters, the Swiss Wikkelhouse features a more robust construction, more efficient insulation and corresponding building technology according to common guidelines. The Swiss Wikkelhouse still corresponds to the original design, but now works in almost all civilized places in the world.
